The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, deplored the attack that hit multiple parts of Lebanon on Tuesday, resulting in thousands of injuries as well as the loss of at least nine lives, including children.

According to a statement, the UN Special Coordinator reminded all parties concerned that, according to international humanitarian law, civilians should not be a target and must be protected at all times, adding that “without a doubt, a single civilian casualty is unacceptable.”

The UN official said that today’s events represent a very worrying escalation in an unacceptably flammable context, calling on all parties concerned to refrain from any further escalation or hostile rhetoric that could lead to a wider conflict that no party can afford.

Hennis-Plasschaert stressed the need to urgently restore calm, calling on all parties involved to make stability a top priority.

She added that the stakes are too high if there is no movement in this direction.
