NEW YORK, Undersecretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo stressed the significance of Yemen’s Hudaydah Port as a lifeline for million people in Yemen who heavily depend on import essential items through the Port.

This came during DiCarlo’s speech on Monday at the Security Council session on the latest developments in the Middle East, warning against any military operation in the populated port area that could have “devastating consequences for civilians”. She stated that Israeli aggression carried out several airstrikes in and around Hudaydah Port in Yemen -last Sunday – as the aggression spokesperson characterized the strikes as “necessary and proportionate against Houthi military targets”. DiCarlo mentioned that Israel aggression claim that the Hudayadah Port was used by the Houthi as the main supply route for the transfer of Iranian weapons from Iran to Yemen. She addressed as well the initial update from the Houthi de facto Ministry of Health, indicating nine deaths, over
80 causalities due to strikes, in addition to significant damage to civilian infrastructure.

The UN official confirmed the safety of all UN personnel in Hudaydah and no damage to UN premises. The Secretary-General emphasized, “All concerned parties to avoid attacks that could harm civilians and damage civilian infrastructure” as she urged everyone to exercise maximum restraint. She noted that the recent developments in the Middle East shows the real danger of region-wide escalation, pointing out the extreme concerning continued exchanges of fire across the Blue Line, which threaten to aggravate regional conflict.

She reiterated UN Secretary-General Antonio’s call for all parties to urgently recommit to the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and immediately return to a cessation of hostility.

DiCarlo quoted the Secretary-General remarks on June 21 “the risk for the conflict in the Middle East to widen is real and must be avoided, one rash move, one miscalculation could trigger a catastr
ophe that goes far beyond the borders” She underscored the urgent need for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza, unconditional release of hostages and a political horizon towards a two-state solution recommitted by both parties. She concluded her briefing by expressing concern about employees detained in Yemen, emphasizing the utmost concern for the well-being of Yemeni UN personnel, national and international organizations, non-governmental organizations, diplomatic missions, and the civilian community arbitrarily detained by the de facto Houthi authorities.

Rosemary DiCarlo urged those authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all detainees, insisting they be treated with full respect for human rights and allowed communication with their families and legal representatives.
