Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is heading to the Jordanian capital, Amman, tomorrow, Wednesday, to participate in the meeting of the Ministerial Contact Group formed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League regarding Gaza.
Turkish diplomatic sources reported today, Tuesday, that Minister Fidan is continuing his contacts within the framework of the Contact Group in order to establish a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Tomorrow’s meeting is expected to discuss the steps that can be taken to stop the ongoing “genocide” in Gaza, end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and ways to implement the two-state solution.
This is the second time in a week that the Turkish minister has participated in the Gaza Contact Group meeting, after he participated in the meeting held in the Spanish capital, Madrid, last Friday, the 13th of this month.
The issue of ensuring the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza and increasing support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Pale
stine Refugees (UNRWA) will also be discussed.
During the Amman meeting, as in the Madrid meeting, Minister Fidan is expected to stress the importance of pressuring Israel and other countries opposed to the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations, and urging more countries to join the case filed against Israel on charges of genocide before the International Court of Justice.
In the same context, the Contact Group meeting seeks to keep the Palestinian issue at the top of the international agenda during the week of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York City. King Abdullah II of Jordan is also expected to receive the Contact Group ministers during their visit.
Last week, the Ministerial Group held a meeting in the Spanish capital Madrid, attended by the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt and Jordan, in addition to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and foreign ministers and European representatives from Norway, S
lovenia, Ireland and Spain.
The final statement of the meeting affirmed the recognition of the State of Palestine as soon as possible and support for the two-state solution. The importance of declaring a ceasefire in Gaza and stopping attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank was emphasized. The statement also stressed the need to deliver urgent and continuous humanitarian aid to Gaza, and announced support for UNRWA’s efforts.
The group decided to hold a meeting at the end of this September in New York City, coinciding with the UN General Assembly meetings.
It is noteworthy that the Joint Ministerial Contact Group on the Palestinian Issue between the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League was formed by a decision of the extraordinary Arab-Islamic summit held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on November 11, 2023. The group includes the foreign ministers of 8 countries: Turkey, Palestine, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria, and the secretaries-general of the Organization of
Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League.
