Today, Thursday, September 12, newspapers issued in Baghdad showed great interest in the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and its impact on deepening bilateral relations with Iraq and on the situation in the region.

Al-Zawraa newspaper, issued by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, focused on the confirmation of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani: “Iraqi-Iranian relations are distinguished by their high level, and they include many historical, religious, cultural, interests and very old strong relations between the two neighboring Muslim peoples.”

It quoted al-Sudani as saying in a joint press conference with Pezeshkian: “This historical neighborhood can be turned into the highest levels of cooperation and partnership, and bilateral work for the interests of our two peoples, and helps to confront current challenges, and support stability,” indicating: “The joint economic file is an important gateway to achieving the aspirations of our two peoples, and in two meetings we discussed the mechanism
s that would advance this important file.”

It pointed out that the Iranian President said: “It is a good opportunity to be on my first visit to Iraq, and I wanted to follow up on the work of the previously concluded agreements and those concluded today (yesterday), which represent a new start for cooperation between the two countries.”

He added: “The visit represents a great opportunity to discuss points of view and draw up future plans.”

The newspaper touched on the extensive discussions between the Iraqi and Iranian delegations, and the signing of 14 bilateral memoranda of understanding.

It continued that aspects of cooperation between the two neighboring countries were discussed, in a way that achieves mutual interests and benefits, as well as following up on the work of the Joint Supreme Committee between Iraq and Iran, which will hold its next meeting in Baghdad. Security cooperation and the joint security agreement were also discussed, as well as constructive cooperation in the field of refining and
energy industries, and cooperation between the private sectors in the two countries.

Al-Sabah newspaper, which is published by the Iraqi Media Network, described the visit as exceptional.

Al-Sabah said that before his arrival in Baghdad yesterday, the Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said this striking sentence: “Our relations with the Islamic world begin in Iraq.”

It added: “The phrase is suggestive because it is true in two meanings, apparent and hidden. As for its apparent meaning, it is true that this is indeed his first foreign trip and its destination was Baghdad, and as for its deeper meaning, it is represented in that Iraq, with its exceptional ties with Iran and its political balance in dealing with its surroundings and the world, has become the ideal gateway to begin activating Iran’s relations in the region.”

The newspaper continued: “The more the necessity of distancing the region from the logic of war and the importance of relying on the language of dialogue and understanding is confirmed,
the more the importance of Iraq as a bridge connecting the shores that are so different is confirmed, and everyone has witnessed this important Iraqi role in critical political moments, the most important of which was the rapprochement between Iran and the Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia.

It concluded by saying: “Pezeshkian’s visit to Baghdad is exceptional by all standards, not only for the two neighboring countries, but for the entire regional environment that is searching for a political example that it can draw and that is capable of achieving the political, economic and security interests of the peoples as an alternative to the fear of the future that has enveloped the entire region as a result of the madness of the occupying Zionist entity and its insistence on continuing the war of extermination against the Palestinians.”
