Philippine authorities announced Thursday that an oil tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of oil capsized and sank off the capital Manila, which led to an oil spill.

The Philippine authorities, in a statement said “the MT Terra Nova was heading to Iloilo City in the central Philippines when it sank in the early hours of this morning in Manila Bay, about 7 kilometers off Limay, Bataan province” Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.

The Environment and Natural Resources Secretary, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has ordered relevant agencies to assess the environmental impact of the massive oil spill from off the coast of Bataan.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said strong winds and high waves were hampering relief efforts, noting that authorities had rescued 16 crew members, four of whom were receiving treatment, while another was reported missing.

The Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that search operations were ongoing for the missing person, adding that an investigation had been opened to determine the cau
ses and circumstances of the accident.
