Local authorities in Russia said Monday that several people are missing after a dam collapsed in the White Sea-Baltic Canal in the Karelia region, northwest Russia.

The waters swept away a temporary sand dam that was built between the 10th and 11th tanks of the White Sea-Baltic Canal during restoration work, authorities clarified.

Emergency services reported that the waters destroyed 13 houses, and that three people, including a child, were rescued. Meanwhile the search for four other people continues, after two people, one of whom was a child, were found alive after being previously considered missing.

However, a local official said that seven people are still missing, as 76 rescuers using a number of equipment are participating in the search operation.
