Saudi Arabia and Greece on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish and build a new high-capacity cable system to transfer digital data, linking the two countries.

The MoU was signed between Dawiyat Integrated Telecommunications and Information Technology Company, owned by the Saudi Electricity Company, and the Greek company Grid Telecom to extend a submarine cable to transfer data between the two countries, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported .

The new cable system will connect Saudi Arabia to the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean, and extend west to major destinations in Europe, contributing to the development of high-capacity data centers and providing a new gateway to connect networks between continents.

The MoU signing comes within the framework of enhancing the digital infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for reliable communications services for local and international operators, cloud computing service providers, content providers and Artificial Intelligen
ce (AI) applications.
