President Abbas arrives in Kazan to participate in BRICS summit


President Mahmoud Abbas arrived Tuesday in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, to attend the BRICS summit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Under the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security”, Kazan will witness the activities of the 16th BRICS summit over three days, with the participation of about 40 countries, 24 of which will be represented by their leaders, while 8 countries will be represented by high-level officials.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is also scheduled to participate in the summit.

This is the first summit after five new countries joined the BRICS group in 2024. The group’s three-day summit will conclude this Thursday.

Russia chairs the BRICS group this year and during this period Moscow has set three priorities: politics and security, cooperation in the economy and finance, and humanitarian and cultural exchanges.

It has also organized more than 200 political, economic and soc
ial events to promote ways to implement further cooperation among the BRICS countries.

The President is accompanied by Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization Hussein al-Sheikh, Chief Justice of Palestine, Presidential Advisor for Religious Affairs and Islamic Relations Mahmoud al-Habbash, Presidential Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs Majdi al-Khalidi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdul Hafeez Nofal.
