Newspapers Review: An Israeli attacking an elderly Palestinian woman in Jerusalem highlight of dailies

The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted on their front page an Israeli settler attacking an elderly Palestinian woman in Jerusalem, as well as injury and detention of Palestinians by Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank.

Al-Quds daily highlighted these topics and said in another top front-page story that the Israeli government is going to facilitate for the Israelis the purchase of land at low prices in the Naqab, in the south of Israel, and the Galilee in the north, two areas heavily populated by indigenous Palestinians, in order to create a Jewish majority in them.

It also said that the situation in Israel is going to get worse after Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government takes over, possibly by the end of this week when it is expected to be presented to the Israeli parliament for a vote of confidence.

Al-Ayyam daily said that many Palestinians were injured in Israeli army incursions as settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque.

It said a youth was injured by the army’s live bullets in Beit Ummar, in the south of the West Bank, before arresting him.

The third Palestinian Arabic daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, also reported on the attacks and injuries of Palestinians at the hands of Israeli forces and settlers, but highlighted as its main front-page story statements by Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh in which he stressed that “this land is ours and we will continue to protect it, and Israeli government threats do not scare us.”

It quoted a former Israeli chief of staff saying that Israel is witnessing the formation of a criminal coalition that seeks to establish a government of criminals, and said that a public opinion poll showed that Israel will be worse at the end of the Netanyahu rule.

Al-Quds quoted Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal saying that “our great people are capable of defeating the occupation and its new radical government.”

Al-Ayyam daily said Moroccans demonstrated in 30 cities in support of Palestine and against the normalization of relations with Israel.

The cold and rainy weather in Palestine as well as the snowstorm that hit the northern United States were also highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian dailies, with al-Quds saying that 22 Americans were killed as a result of the snowstorm and al-Hayat al-Jadida saying power was cut and flights canceled in many areas in the United States due to the snow storm.
