Most of the 27 EU member countries are to vote Sunday, June 9, in European elections amid huge geopolitical challenges in the world, with wars in Gaza and Ukraine and internally with the rise of extreme right-wing parties.

The organizing of the European elections is the responsibility of each EU member state, as voting takes place between June 6 and 9.

The European Parliament is the only EU institution directly elected by European citizens every five years. A total of 720 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) representing various political groups will be elected; 15 more compared to the last elections held in 2019.

Over 360 million European citizens are being called to elect their representatives to the EP.

Distribution of seats in the EP is based on the population. The EU’s largest country, Germany, will elect 96 MEPs, while the smallest (Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta), will elect six each.

Analysts opine that this year’s elections are crucial for the future of the common European project due to a tumult
uous time in world history.
