Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Naeem Al-Aboudi, confirmed today, Tuesday, the continuation of international cooperation with Iraq to develop its national capabilities in peaceful nuclear applications.

A statement by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research stated that “the Chairman of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Naeem Al-Aboudi, participated as a representative of the Republic of Iraq in the sixty-eighth session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the Austrian capital, Vienna.”

The Minister of Education stressed in his speech during the conference, “the pursuit of the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology and the enhancement of its development, economic and health programs and support its future plans to obtain energy from various sources.”

He explained that “Iraq and its competent executive institutions are working seriously to achieve the goals of sustainable devel
opment and support this endeavor by joining a number of agreements, including the Nuclear Safety Convention and the Joint Agreement on the Safety and Management of Spent Fuel and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, in addition to legislating and activating a number of related laws, including the Law of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and the Law of the National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Control in 2024.”

He added that “the Iraqi government continues its positive cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in the areas of building and developing national capabilities in peaceful nuclear applications through technical cooperation programs and projects as well as training and development opportunities,” noting that “these programs are important in promoting the peaceful and safe uses of nuclear technology.”
