Kuwait Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hein, held a celebration ceremony on Tuesday, attended by UN Security Council in Geneva, and representatives of the group of countries of the International Coalition for the Missing people.
Al-Hein told KUNA after the ceremony that this celebration comes on the occasion of the fifth anniversary, which falls on June 11th , after the unanimous adoption of a Kuwaiti draft resolution by the UN Security Council under No. 2474 regarding missing people and prisoners, which Kuwait was honored to present.
During its membership in the Security Council 2018-19 years.
Al-Hein added that the desired goal behind Resolution 2474, is to urge all countries to implement this resolution by taking more effective measures to prevent cases of disappearance of people in response to the urgent and right calls of their families who seek peace of mind by clarifying their fate.
Al-Hein said that the State of Kuwait seeks to strengthen cooperation regarding
missing people, including Kuwaiti prisoners with the Iraqi side and through the tripartite committee and members of the coalition, so that there will be greater cooperation to reveal their fate.
At the conclusion of his statement, Al-Hein explained that the Kuwaiti resolution that was unanimously adopted but not limited to Iraq, but rather affects an international issue present in all conflicts from World War I until now.
There are missing people who have no trace, and the Resolution 2474 stresses the necessity of finding appropriate mechanisms to reveal the fate of missing people.
On June 11, 2019, the UN unanimously adopted resolution 2474, the Council called upon parties to armed conflict to take all appropriate measures, to actively search for persons reported missing, to enable the return of their remains and to account for persons reported missing “without adverse distinction”.
Through the text, the Council also called upon parties to armed conflict to take appropriate measures to prevent persons fr
om going missing, to pay the utmost attention to cases of children reported missing, and to register and notify the personal details of persons deprived of their liberty, including prisoners of war.
It further called upon States, in cases of persons missing resulting from armed conflict, to take measures, as appropriate, to ensure thorough, prompt, impartial and effective investigations and the prosecution of offences linked to missing persons due to armed conflict.
