Jordan Sees 23.8% Growth in Food Production Over Past Decade

Jordan has witnessed a 23.8% increase in overall food production across agricultural and industrial sectors from 2013 to 2022, according to the Department of Statistics’ latest Food Budget Report.

The study highlights steady progress in key production metrics, with notable improvements in domestic output.

The report underscores Jordan’s efforts to bolster self-sufficiency, particularly in crops where the country has historically faced supply deficits, such as potatoes, onions, and carrots. The significant uptick in local production has reduced reliance on imports for these essential commodities.

Released on the occasion of World Food Day, the Department of Statistics emphasized that food security remains one of Jordan’s most pressing challenges, particularly in light of global supply chain disruptions.

Ensuring food security is a central component of the national agenda, in line with directives from King Abdullah II, which prioritize enhancing self-reliance in food production and mitigating risks associat
ed with international food supply volatility.

As part of its commitment to strengthening food security, the Department of Statistics has developed the Jordanian Food Security Platform, slated for launch later this month.

The platform will play a critical role in achieving the objectives set out in the National Food Security Strategy by providing accurate, real-time data on production, consumption, market dynamics, and resource availability. This will allow policymakers to make informed decisions to secure food sovereignty and build resilience in the face of external shocks.

The platform is designed to offer key economic indicators and forecasts to facilitate strategic planning, ensuring that Jordan is well-positioned to meet growing demand while safeguarding its food supply.

Jordan joins countries worldwide in celebrating World Food Day, an initiative spearheaded by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which focuses on combating global hunger and malnutrition.

This year’s theme, ”
The Right to Food: For a Better Life and Future,” calls for coordinated efforts from governments, NGOs, and communities to promote sustainable agricultural practices and increase local production capacities, especially amidst rising global challenges such as conflicts and economic crises.

The FAO’s message resonates with Jordan’s vision of agricultural development and food security, advocating for enhanced investment in local agricultural infrastructure and innovative practices that will ensure sustainable growth in food production for future generations.
