An international gathering in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Monday sought to ratchet up global efforts against drug trafficking, agreeing on the need to unify measures to clamp down on the scourge. The International Conference on Drug Control, which brought together interior ministers from some nine countries, including Kuwait, cited efforts including surveillance measures and the sharing of information, as crucial in the fight against narcotics, according to a final statement released after the talks.

In addition to these measures, the statement also cited the passage of relevant legislation, coupled with greater security cooperation and gradually updating criminal records, as amongst the significant steps required to push forward the global battle against drugs.

It went on to warn against the rampant ill use of social media platforms by traffickers, many of whom rely on such methods to advertise their products to large global audiences, with young adolescents often being easy prey to these gangs, it added.
