Baghdad: The Indian newspaper Hindu reported that the death toll from adulterated alcoholic beverages in the state of Tamil Nadu, southern India, has risen to 55 people, while 142 others are still in hospitals.

The state governor announced the payment of compensation of 100 thousand rupees ($ 1.2 thousand) to the families of the victims and compensation of 50 thousand rupees to the injured.

He also ordered the formation of a special investigation committee that must submit a report on the incident after 3 months.

The incident occurred in the city of Kalakurishi, 250 km from the state capital.

The first information about the deaths from adulterated alcohol appeared on June 18, and the police arrested 14 people on charges of trading in adulterated alcoholic beverages, and the government dismissed a number of police chiefs in the city.
