Amman: The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) received verdicts from the appeal courts on Sunday regarding appeals filed against the initial lists of candidates for the 20th parliamentary elections, which are set for September 10.

The IEC had accepted 174 lists of candidates for local electoral districts, and 25 lists of candidates for the general electoral district allocated to parties, and rejected 11 names among the lists that submitted their candidacy applications for the general district whose seats are allocated to parties.

Mohammad Khair Al-Rawashdeh, spokesperson for the IEC, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the courts’ decisions on the appeals came against three appeals filed against the initial lists of candidates, and the courts rejected the appeals, which leaves the initial lists as they are.

He clarified that the IEC will carry out the lottery among the 25 general “party” lists on Monday following receipt of the court rulings on the appeals.

Al-Rawashdeh said that the head of the
general constituency election committee will conduct the draw in the presence of the commissioners of the party lists and the commissioners of the party alliances, where he will approve the result of the draw to determine the serial number on the ballot paper for the general constituency at the level of the Kingdom.

He pointed out that the deadline for withdrawing from candidacy on local lists, according to the parliamentary election timetable, is August 26.

The IEC had allowed early electoral advertising, which will end on September 8, the day before the election silence, which is the day before polling day.

The number of party lists and party alliances in the general constituency amounted to 25 lists, comprising 697 candidates, while the number of local electoral lists amounted to 174 lists, comprising 954 candidates.
