At least 22 people were injured after a fire broke out in a residential building in the city of Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany.

A statement by the German fire forces said Sunday that most of the injured, including the ambulance crew, suffered from suffocation due to smoke inhalation, noting that 12 out of 22 injured were transferred to the hospital.

Smoke was rising from several windows in the front and back of the three-story building, and that the building was no longer fit for habitation, the statement added.

Last March, four people were killed, and at least 21 others were injured, in a fire that broke out in a nursing home in Bedburg-Hau in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany.
