The European Union renewed its commitment to helping Iraq fight corruption.

The European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Thomas Sailer, said during the opening of the activities of the “Second Arab Forum for Promoting Transparency and Good Governance”, today, Tuesday, in the capital, Baghdad, “We worked with integrity within the European Union project to support integrity and financial control in Iraq with a budget of 5 million euros, and there is a complementary strategy worth 4.5 million euros.”

He added: “During our meeting with the Prime Minister, we discussed the mechanism for helping Iraq combat corruption, and we concluded the need to proceed with a sustainable approach and procedures that begin with discussions to lead to legislation by Parliament, and these are very important steps. We are also talking with members of the House of Representatives and the relevant authorities about what is the best legislation to combat corruption.’

He continued: ‘There should be no amnesty for corrupt individuals, and t
here must be cooperation between all Arab institutions concerned with promoting integrity and transparency.’
