The European Union (EU) announced Monday that it has activated its emergency aid reserve to avoid a risk of famine in Afghanistan, bringing the total to nearly 150 million euro (USD 161 million) in humanitarian aid for this crisis in 2024.
Nearly 126 million euros of this funding will support partners working inside Afghanistan, over 11 million euros to the needs of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and 11 million euros for humanitarian organizations in Iran said the European Commission in a statement.
In Afghanistan, EU aid will continue to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable populations and will focus on food assistance, shelter, healthcare and access to water and sanitation.
In Pakistan, EU aid will go to respond to the humanitarian needs of displaced Afghans and their host communities, for instance, providing access to legal assistance, healthcare, nutrition, and education.
In Iran, the vast majority of aid, will go to address the needs of displaced Afghan populations and host communities.

ouncement came as senior representatives of the international community gathered in Brussels on Monday to discuss Afghanistan’s food and health crisis, the EU humanitarian aid is solely channeled through humanitarian partners working on the ground, it noted.
