The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) rejected the announcement made by the ruling military council in Niger to adopt a three-year transitional period, stressing that the military option of handling Niger’s crisis is still on the table.

In televised statements on Monday, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace, and security Abdel Fattah Musa affirmed that the three-year transitional period is unacceptable, adding that ECOWAS needs restoration of the constitutional order as soon as possible. He highlighted that ECOWAS bloc does not want to fight Niger’s people.

The regional bloc will never barter with the coup plotters in Niger, he said, affirming that ECOWAS will not negotiate with the military council in Niger on a three-year transitional period.

He outlined that ECOWAS would use all the options available once it realized that the bloc is being manipulated by the coup plotters, calling for the release of Niger’s detained President Mohamed Bazoum and restore the constitutional order.
