Dailies highlight an attack by Israeli settlers on Sheikh Jarrah

Palestinian Arabic-language dailies highlighted today an attack last night by Israeli settlers on Palestinian civilians in the occupied Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

They said a group of Israeli settlers protected by Israeli police stormed the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah and assaulted civilians and their homes with stones and other objects in full view of the Israeli Police who provided the settlers with protection.

In its main news story, Al-Ayyam highlighted US President Joe Biden’s warning to Russia not to invade Ukraine and the Kremlin’s condemnation of what it called “the hysteria” of the US concerning this file.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted a statement by Minister Hussein al-Sheikh, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), that the recent meeting of the PLO Central Council witnessed “the development of a comprehensive roadmap based on the Council’s decisions that set the parameters of the next stage.”

Al-Quds focused on a statement by Hamas’s chief abroad Khaled Meshal that his movement was not considering an alternative to the PLO as the top representative of the Palestinian people.

Al-Ayyam said far-right Israeli MK Itamar Ben Gvir said he will set up a “parliamentary office” in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said a phone call between US President Biden and Russia’s Vladimir Putin yesterday failed to de-escalate the tensions around the issue of Ukraine.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennet urged Israelis in Ukraine to immediately leave the country.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki as saying that the Ministry’s team was following up with great attention the situation of the Palestinian community and students in Ukraine as well as the staff of the Palestinian embassy in the country, amid fears of a security escalation in the country.
