Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Communications and Media Commission, Eng. Bassam Al-Zaidi, met with the Head of the Cybersecurity Department of the Digital Networks and Society Department at the International Telecommunication Union, Orhan Osmani, and the Director of the Arab Region at the International Telecommunication Union, Adel Darwish, to discuss ways to support and develop Iraqi capabilities in the field of cybersecurity.

The Commission stated in a statement, “These meetings took place on the sidelines of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI for Good) for the year 2024 held in Switzerland, as they discussed how to raise Iraq’s level in the Global Assessment of the Cybersecurity Index (GCI) with the aim of providing a safe cyber environment that supports Iraqi national security and attracts technological investments.”

Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Communications and Media Commission, Bassam Al-Zaidi, said: The importance of st
rengthening the cybersecurity infrastructure and developing national cadres specialized in this field was discussed, adding, “The projects that will be implemented in Iraq and future plans for cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union were reviewed in order to exchange experiences to reach the best global practices in the field of cybersecurity.”

Al-Zaidi stressed “Iraq’s commitment to achieving the highest standards of cybersecurity to protect national interests and secure sensitive data and information.”

For his part, the Head of the Cybersecurity Department at the Digital Networks and Society Department at the International Telecommunication Union, Orhan Osmani, expressed “the Union’s readiness to provide technical and advisory support to enhance Iraq’s capabilities in this vital field and develop technical cadres in it.
