About 52 passengers on board two public transport buses were killed, and others went missing, in floods hitting the western desert of Niger.
The Nigerien News Agency reported that at least 52 people drowned and others went missing in an accident in the Western Sahara of the country, specifically in the Tahoua region, located 70 kilometers from the city of the same name, on the road linking it to the Tiliya region, noting that the region has been witnessing floods since last June.
It indicated that two vehicles carrying many passengers, most of whom were traders from Niger and Nigeria, to the market in the city of Telmessis got stuck in a waterway before being swept away by a strong current, noting that search operations for the missing are continuing, after survivors were evacuated.
Essa Lawan Wandarma, the Nigerian Minister of Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management, had previously announced that major floods resulting from the rainy season on August 7th had killed at least 94 people and affected more
than 137,000 people.
