The leadership of the Sulaymaniyah Police Directorate announced today, Monday, the arrest of a gang specialized in excavating archaeological sites and selling antiquities, in one of the governorate’s districts.

The leadership said in a statement that its forces in the “Sayed Sadiq” district arrested a gang of four people, on charges of illegal excavation for antiquities.

It explained that the arrest came based on accurate information about the activity of the gang, which was working to dig a tunnel inside a house to reach the antiquities, and the police began its investigations and intensive monitoring of the gang, which resulted in the arrest of the accused while they were committing the crime.

The leadership indicated that investigations are still ongoing with them to reveal more details related to the case.
