The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) have entered into an agreement with the Jordan Green Ammonia Company to utilize designated lands for the development of green ammonia and green hydrogen production projects in Jordan.
As per the agreement, the project will harness renewable energy to generate electricity and is expected to produce 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually, eventually reaching 300,000 tons. The project will rely on solar energy and desalinated seawater, with power generation capacity reaching 670 megawatts, supported by energy storage systems.
Green ammonia, produced using renewable energy and desalinated water, and green hydrogen, created through the electrolysis of water, are seen as critical components of Jordan’s sustainable energy future.
The agreement was signed by ASEZA Commissioner for Entrepreneurship and Community Development, Ramzi Kabariti, CEO of Jordan Green Ammonia Company, Wael Suleiman, and CEO of the Aqaba Developmen
t Corporation, Hussein Safadi.
Suleiman stated that the project, if proven economically viable, is expected to attract investments totaling pound 1.2 billion and create more than 8,000 jobs during the construction phase, with an additional 700 permanent positions during operations.
Chairperson of the ASEZA, Nayef Fayez, highlighted that the partnership aligns with the Kingdom’s broader efforts, coordinated with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, to implement green energy projects. He underscored that the agreement is part of the ASEZA’s strategic plan to support green industries and transform Aqaba into a green city.
Fayez emphasized that such projects are key to realizing Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision, promoting sustainable development, enhancing investment, and generating employment opportunities for Jordanians. He noted the significance of expanding the clean energy sector and transitioning to a green economy to bolster economic growth and sustainable development.
