Algeria’s representative to the United Nations, Ammar Ben Jama, said today, Wednesday, that Algeria will present a draft resolution to members of the UN Security Council “to stop the killing in Rafah” in the Gaza Strip.

The Algerian diplomat added, in a statement to reporters after a closed Security Council consultation session devoted to discussing the situation in Rafah: ‘We will present a draft UN Security Council resolution to the members to stop the killing in Rafah.’

He explained, “The draft resolution that will be presented regarding Rafah will be a short and decisive text to stop the killing.”

Yesterday, Tuesday, the UN Security Council held an emergency closed consultation session on the situation in Rafah in the Gaza Strip, at the request of Algeria.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced, on Monday, that the death toll from the Israeli bombing that targeted a camp for displaced people in Rafah, south of the Strip, last Sunday, had risen to at least 45 people and the injury of 249 others, spar
king widespread international reactions.

Meanwhile, an Israeli government spokesman said that preliminary results of an ongoing investigation into a large number of deaths and injuries in a bombing that targeted a camp for displaced people in the southern Gaza Strip indicate that ‘an air strike targeted Hamas leaders that caused a fire that killed civilians in Rafah.’

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that what happened in the city of Rafah was an ‘unfortunate mistake.’

Arab countries, international organizations and bodies condemned the Israeli bombing that targeted a gathering of tents for displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.
