An earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off the coast of El Salvador on Thursday.

The earthquake occurred 70 km south of Mizata Beach in La Libertad, at a depth of 33.9 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

For its part, El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) ruled out, via ‘X’ platform, the country being threatened by a tsunami due to the earthquake, noting that seismic activity is being closely monitored.

No casualties or material damage were reported due to the earthquake.

A devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck El Salvador in 2001, killing hundreds and injuring and displacing thousands.
