Bethlehem-Ma’an- Today marks the 42nd anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which was carried out in the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps on September 16, 1982.
The Sabra and Shatila massacre was carried out in the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps on September 16, 1981 and lasted for three days by Lebanese groups represented by the Lebanese Phalange Party, the South Lebanon Army and the Israeli occupation army. The number of people killed in the massacre is not clearly known and estimates range from 750 to 3,500 men, children, women and elderly civilians, the majority of whom were Palestinians but also included Lebanese.
At that time, the camp was completely surrounded by the South Lebanon Army and the Israeli army, which was under the command of Ariel Sharon and Rafael Eitan, while the leadership of the Lebanese Forces was under the command of Elie Hobeika, the influential Phalangist official.
The Lebanese forces entered the camp and began carrying out the massacre that shoo
k the world. They used knives and other weapons in the killing of the camp’s residents. The Israeli army’s mission was to surround the camp and light it up at night with flares, prevent anyone from escaping, and isolate the two camps from the world. In this way, Israel made the task easier for the Lebanese forces and allowed them to kill the Palestinians without losing a single bullet.
