14 Killed in Bosnia and Herzegovina Due to Floods, Landslides

Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Bosnia and Herzegovina have killed at least 14 people, according to an initial toll.

Darko Jukan, spokesman for the Jablanica government, located about 70 kilometers southwest of the capital Sarajevo, said in press statements that 14 bodies have been found in the area so far, and there is a high probability that this would not be the final toll.

For its part, the Bosnian Federal Presidency confirmed in a statement that it had sent army units to the area, adding that engineering and rescue units and a helicopter from the Bosnian and Herzegovinian army had been mobilized urgently to provide assistance to the civil authorities to deal with this disaster.

Several civil defense vehicles were able to enter Jablanica, which had been cut off from the world for hours due to landslides.

The city, which has a population of about 4,000, is the most affected by the floods.

In the city of Kiseljak, about 40 kilometers northwest of Sarajevo, the water covered a number of h
ouses, cars and gardens within a few minutes.

The city’s mayor, Mladen Misuric-Ramljak, said in press statements that the rain began to fall last Thursday, and continued throughout the night, adding that everything was normal until about 5 am, then huge amounts of rain began to fall, adding that there were hundreds of houses that were flooded.
